PEMBUDAYAAN MATEMATIKA DI SEKOLAH UNTUK MENCAPAI KEUNGGULAN BANGSA

Civilizing mathematics is not as easy as civilizing social education. We should know about the sense of mathematics in various dimentions. We can’t only esteemed mathematics by a point of view. We have to know what mathematics is, what the purpose of mathematics, how to learn mathematics, how to implement mathematics in daily life, and then how to civilize mathematics to develop Indonesia’s quality.

Learning mathematics is about how to think critically, how to think logically, how to be creative, how to solve problems, etc. Mathematics is not only about numerals, formulas, or directions. Talking mathematics is same as discuss about what the objects are and what the methods employed.

Absolutists had a notion that discovery is can’t be said to be mathematics yet, and modern mathematis is the result that can’t be stayed away, but social contrustivists don’t approve this notion. Social constructivist had a notion that mathematics is human’s activity, human’s work, and human’s creation in some periods. The difference in mathemtics is because of the creativity of the subject.

Civilizing mathematics in school starts by definite about school mathematics. Ebbut, S and Straker, A definite school mathematics as, (1) mathematical activity is discovery activity about the pattern and relationship, (2) mathematical activity needs creativity, imagination, intuition, and discovery, (3) mathematical activity should be communicated, (4) problem solving is a part of mathematical activity, (5) algorithm is a procedure to get answers in mathematics problem, and (6) mathematics needs social interaction.

In civilizing mathematics, we alsa need mathematics communication. Mathematics communication include mathematics material communication, formal mathematics communication, normative mathematics communication, and spiritual mathematics communication.

Material mathematics communication is mathematics communication in lowest dimention. Formal mathematics communication is dominated by correlation characteristic. Normative mathematics communication has higher dimention cause the characteristic’s mixed is more complex and more extensive. Last, spiritual mathematics communication, include all of the other mathematics communication.
